Practical Essentials: When You Gotta Go

Updated: June 7, 2026

Toilets

Let’s talk about the thing nobody wants to talk about. Public toilets exist in Delhi, but the definition of “usable” varies wildly, the way the definition of “close by” varies wildly when someone gives you directions. Your safest bets: metro stations (cleaned regularly), malls, hotel lobbies (walk in like you belong), and chain restaurants like McDonald’s or Starbucks.

Carry tissues - Toilet paper is almost guaranteed to be absent. In many places, there’ll be a water jet or a bucket and mug instead. When in India.

Carry hand sanitiser — something you trust, if you don’t trust Dettol or Lifebuoy. You can thank us later.

Maybe not do as the locals do — Every now and then, you’ll notice a car or a motorcyclist park their vehicle by the side of the road and run to face the nearest wall and... well, go! Another favourite is trees. Besides being a public menace, it’s needless to say that it also reeks. I am telling you so you won’t be shocked. Not a suggestion to mimic.
