Photography: When To & When Not To

Updated: June 7, 2026

People — if you don’t have a zoom lens, ask before you photograph anyone. Some will love it and pose with the enthusiasm of a Bollywood extra. Others won’t. Don’t photograph beggars, labourers, or children without consent — it’s not a poverty safari. We know we have poor people, but they deserve their dignity too.

Religious sites — most temples, mosques, and gurudwaras allow photography in the general area but not inside the inner sanctum. Check for signage or ask. Remove your shoes, cover your head at gurudwaras and some mosques, and cover your shoulders and knees at mosques. And just so you know: they don’t take a joke.

Military and infrastructure — never photograph military installations, army personnel, bridges, airports, or railway infrastructure. This isn’t a cultural preference; it’s the law, and the police will take it seriously.
